Creating a program to "watch" another window

I play an online text-based game and I was curious as to exactly how you would create a program to "watch" a specific window. (of the front end connected to said game) I would basically be looking for the program to wait for a very specific string of text and then capture up to 20 lines and then depending on options you choose yourself enter commands, waiting for specific strings back before entering more commands.
