no sound

Post by nader » Mon Jul 31, 2006 12:42 am

How come I can't hear sound when playing QuickBasic games? I am running Windows XP Home Edition. Also I disabled the virus scanner (Norton, which gobbles lots of memory) but that didn't help either.

Thanks,
Nader

I have read, more than once, that Windows XP is very user unfriendly with sounds through QuickBASIC. In the days before XP, QuickBASIC could send notes from the SOUND command to the small loudspeaker that is found inside the computer box. XP pervetrs most of this, and allows none through the "Desk speakers".

To hear what you can through QuickBASIC, try this little program, and listen carefully:

Code: Select all

FOR Hz = 50 TO 1000 STEP TO
PRINT Hz; "Hz for one second. Press any key for next sound."
  SOUND Hz, 8.2
  WHILE INKEY$ = "":WEND
NEXT

Oh, oh. In the program above, please change the first line to read:

Code: Select all

FOR Hz = 50 TO 1000 STEP 50

Most win OS previous to XP (at least 95 and 98 ) you could play at least small sound files through QB in a couple of ways but as the other contributor says, XP seems to squash most of that.

PLAY command works under XP... and through the speakers, I think.

I tried the second example in the QuickBASIC Help on PLAY. Yes, it does make some sounds through the computer's little speaker, though fairly poorly.
Ralph. Running QuickBASIC Version 4.5, Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2, and HP LaserJet 4L printer.
