Help installing!

Post by SGael » Sat Jul 09, 2005 12:24 am

Okay, I feel stupid/idiotic/noobish... You see I downloaded 7.1 today. I unziped iit and everything, but when I clicked the icon for QBasic, it looked like a dos program beginning, then the screen when black, returned to normal desktop screen, and displayed the error message:
C:\DOCUME~1\HPAUTH~1\Desktop\pds71\QB.PIF
Invalid startup directory please check your pif file. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
Also, when I tried to open up the help files it told me that they were dos help files, so I tried opening them through dos, it didn't help. I have Windows XP Home. Do I have to move any files to particular directories, if I do, what directories? Will 7.1 even work on XP? Basically, *looks at subject* I just need help installing, getting the program set up, and getting started.

Thanks, SG

1st try accessing it from the command prompt..

CD\QB71
QBX

(assuming qb71 is where the version 7.1- PDS is located)

You'll have to access the help from the ide.

Then if that works, try looking at the properties of the desktop pif file.
memory, close on exit should be checked, default screen size and of
course, the path to the program. it should be windowed and not full screen
also.

Thanks, I figured it out, sort of. I was using a shortcut already in the folder. Unfortunately, the file name the shortcut was linked to was messed up somehow. I simply clicked the actual .exe file instead. Later, I made a short cut to that exe file and put it on my desktop. It's all good now.

Again, thanks.

Okay I am having the Exact same problem with the same error message. Can you please say what you did again? I'm not really following what you said you did to fix it. Thanks a lot.

Okay, Don't use the shortcut that came in the download. Instead delete it, it's crap. Make a shortcut to the file QBX.exe on your desktop, or simply enter the program from the qbx.exe icon.
