Re: qb45 com port program
Well, basically the com port will not send a signal for when there is no data to send. The way a com port works is that any data can be sent at anytime, unless the buffer is full (b/c data is coming in too fast) or if hardware handshaking, rts/cts is being used and tells the com port to wait until r...

Re: QBasic lives in 2003?
Try to use subs instead of line labels. Linelabels tend to get confusing and are harder to debug. sub and functions are very powerful if you use them right. Break down subs to simple tasks like displaying a file or sending a message. another sub may be to simply read in the message from the user, an...

Re: Limiting results on screen
i assume the results are printed by line or by variable, IE For X = 1 to 200 PRINT ARRAY(X) next or some such arrangement. The easiest thing to do is, in SCREEN 0, For X = 1 to 200 PRINT ARRAY(X) if X mod 20 = 0 then DO: loop until inkey$ <> "" '^this means every 20 lines* next * mod...

Re: Subs vs. Gosubs
I'm not sure about Subs Or Gosubs. I would imagine you COULD say gosubs are more memory efficient, but QB by defualt passes by pointer, so that doesn't matter, as far as proccessor, same deal, a gosub doesnt require (i don't think) passing any arguements at all. I don't use gosubs much though anyway...

Re: Timed Delay
yes, thats a good idea. I dont beleive that TIMER ON is what you want to use. A TIMER based delay is probly all ya need. As far as using the SOUND statement, it used to work great, but now most newer computers do NOT stop when a system speaker sound is being made.

Re: Keypress routine wanted
Two things to look out for: 1) Qbasic's help should tell ya the scan codes if ya read the documentation on ON KEY 2) ON KEY has one problem. It check for keypress after EVERY line of code, so if ya have a short input routine, waiting for number input say, and then you accidently press something to t...

Re: What's the differencs
I believe that is pretty much the only difference, Quickbasic can compile. You can find it on this site in the Compilers section.

Re: Timed Delay
how little or how large a delay are you looking for? For a delay of a tenth a sec, just use a TIMER based delay, im sure you probly know this, so I figure your going for a shorter delay. otherwise, T! = TIMER do: loop until TIMER != T maybe do: loop until TIMER 'could slow it down? You can wai...

Re: Icon
Qbasic writes DOS programs. DOS does not have icons. Icons are for windows, mac, linux, ect... operating systems with graphical user interfaces. DOS is a command line interface, that simply waits for the user to enter commands to do things. So, the short answer is, no, I don't believe you can. You c...

Re: A lot but I need help.
some suggestions: 1) use QuickBasic (available from this site) 2) Use it's Help system to answer all questions on all commands. Also, look for uses of them online. 3) A text editor is not hard to create, for one page (screen). multiple pages i have yet to try. I can send you an example in a few hours.

Re: Help installing
A qbasic program does not need to use the windows system registry or any such thing to bring the need for install shield. A self extracting Zip that creates sub-directories if needed should suffice. Uninstallation only requires the Delete key.

Re: pcx viewer help
well, that would be a bit complicated, but, the AF library already has a tool for that. I cant remember where i got it, but i found a game/tutorial that uses it, i can send it to va via email if ya'd like, it basically gives you better sprite routines and allows you to use double buffering in screen...

Ok, well basically the guy who wrote that was very kool and gave ya the easy ability to do just what ya want. see this part here: '*** change these values to, say, decompress the image into an '*** array or something. fxoffset = 0: fxsegment = &HA000 'THIS PART create an a...

Re: Card game
Well, this always works: PAIR = 0 PAIR_IS = 0 For x = 1 to 5 for y = 1 to 5 if Card(X) = Card(Y) then PAIR = PAIR + 1 PAIR_IS = CARD(X) end if next next if pair then print "YOU HAVE A PAIR OF"; PAIR_IS; "!" this does not, however, check for two or more pair, but...

Re: QBasic on Win XP
The shell command access dos even while a program is already running. XP does not use dos, only emulates. This means it cannot access dos, as it is not really running. So, on win XP, you cannot use shell command. This is also the reason why many does programs will not run on XP. XP is stupid that wa...
